A great weekend of racing for the Robinson Motor Sports customers at Sebring in the Januray 2011 National Points Races. The Formula Enterprises cars of Matthew Mair and Matthew Inge were both under the RMS canopy fo the weekend.
Matthew Mair is back for 2011 after winning 2 races last year and setting 3 track records for the year. His attempt to win the 2010 Formula Enterprises National Championship race at Road America in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Runoffs fell just short with a second place finish. Mair was leading when a full course caution came out in the National Championship race. On the restart he slid off course on the cooled off tires. He drove an amazing race, setting the track record in the process, only to catch the leader and couldn't get by in a last lap attempt to pass, focing Mair to finish 2nd by .6 seconds. "We are going to be back in 2011 to finish the job we didn't get done in 2010" Matthew said recently.
Also returning to the Robinson Motor Sports team is Matthew Inge. He ran the last 2 years on the Pro F2000 series with a few wins and multiple top 3 finishes. "I am looking to get back with RMS for a great season and attempt to win the Runoffs for 2011" Inge said. He was going to jump into the FE for the first time at Sebring with no test days under his belt.
Inge proved to be the fastest driver of the FE field at Sebring, qualifying on the pole for Saturday's race. Only a fraction of a second behind was Mair. It was an RMS front row!
These 2 young guys both want to win the race to get a head start on the 2011 season. And they proved the point on the start of the race when they broke away from the rest of the field. Inge lead for a short time, only to get passed again by Mair. This went of all during the 13 lap race around the 3.8 mile length track. At the end, it was Mair by a second over Inge.
Both cars are using the Valvoline VRR1 racing oil and the fully synthetic gear lube in the 5 speed gear boxes. Both guys loved the power they had on store during the race.
The Sunday portion of the double race weekend had the two up front again as Inge laid down a super fast lap which took the pole over Mair by 1.5 seconds. "Wow, it all came together for me on that lap" Inge said. "There was no traffic, and the car was perfect"
On the start, again the RMS cars of Inge and Mair pulled out a gap over the rest of the field. Unfortunately, Inge broke a driveshaft and stopped on the second lap of the race, giving Mair a comfortable margin for the win. This weekend had Mair win both of the National Championship points races.
